The repeal of prohibition

As we learnt before, a lot of women were in favor of prohibition. But is wasn't the case of all of them. Indeed, the WONPR, Women’s Organization for National Prohibition Reform, acted during several years for the repeal of this amendment, considerating the disaster of this law in the country. For instance, they used the fact that children are learnt to disrespect the law because everyone was disrespecting it by drinking alcohol

The end of prohibition was progressive. First, some beers and wines were allowed, and then all alcohols in saloons. It was a real celebration for all the country. It marked not only the end of a period of crime, bootlegging, but also the liberation of a population. Alcohol helped to cheer up people in a difficult context : after the economic crisis (1929), unemployment increased a lot and the period was tough for everyone.Alcohol was a way to bring people together

The repeal of prohibition was a major issue during the 1932 presidential elction, as Roosevelt was in favor of it, and Hoover, at the start, a dry. After the election of Roosevelt finally made the repeal to the end, assuming that the 18th amendment only created crime and an increase of alcohol consumption.

If the repeal was ratified, each state had the choice to decide whether alcohol would be allowed or not. But in only a few months, 36 states approved the amendment, which is the legal minimum to include it in the constitution. Alongside the social aspect of the repeal, this amendment also permitted to increase government incomes, by creating taxes.
